Description

The Associate Director, Alumni Communications leads strategic communications in support of Alumni Relations priorities in alignment with colleagues in Alumni Relations and the Division of Advancement. This includes establishing, developing, and stewarding an overall communication plan for Alumni Relations; identifying and developing alumni-centered stories in alignment with AR, Advancement, and University priorities; elevating the reputation of Brown University through media visibility of alumni achievements and accomplishments; and working closely with leaders across the University, including in Advancement Communications and University Communications, to ensure an aligned and meaningful approach to our communication efforts.

The Associate Director also collaborates with colleagues across AR to ensure excellence in written, visual, and digital content, including those supporting volunteer engagement programs, alumni events and experiences, inclusion and belonging initiatives, and various alumni governance and advisory boards. This role reports to the Director of Alumni Leadership, and maintains a close working partnership with the Vice President of Alumni Relations.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB), including experience/ability to identify and emphasize diverse perspectives in programming, communications, and strategy.

  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills as well as proofreading ability. Successful ability to pitch and place earned media. Demonstrated ability developing bylined content for others, i.e. speechwriting, script writing, executive communications, etc.

  • Demonstrated understanding of audience segmentation and differentiation; must be able to communicate with and on behalf of multiple University constituencies. Experience writing for multiple communication channels, including email, web, and social media and familiarity with content management systems is preferred.

  • Creativity, motivation, and superior problem-solving skills. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent computer skills including, but not limited to, Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, electronic mail and calendars, and Google suite of products that support high-level fundraising. 

  • Must be detail-oriented and able to balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

 

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience required in a related field such as nonprofit, social impact, or higher education communications or public relations. 
    Preference for a degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations.
