POSITION TITLE: Senior Director, Education

LOCATION: Remote in the United States

The Association of Rheumatology Professionals (ARP) is the interprofessional division of the American College of Rheumatology, supporting the needs of this diverse group of interprofessionals working in the medical subspeciality of rheumatology by providing professional training and development, research, advocacy, and practice resources.

Since its founding in 1985, the Rheumatology Research Foundation (the largest private funding source for rheumatology research and training in the U.S.) has invested more than $205 million directly into its two mission priorities: rheumatology training and development and targeted rheumatic disease research. Programs funded by the Foundation train the next generation of rheumatology professionals who are tackling rheumatology’s challenges and working toward discoveries to improve the health of people with rheumatic disease.


TITLE: Senior Director, Education

STATUS:  Exempt

LEVEL: Senior Director

DIRECT SUPERVISOR: Senior Vice President, Chief Administrative Officer


The Senior Director, Education has overall operational responsibility for ACR’s educational content strategy. This position is part of the senior leadership team that drives the overall strategy for the organization. The Senior Director is responsible for aligning educational operations and content development across the organization and ensuring compliance with applicable criteria and standards.

To best support rheumatology professionals to excel in their specialty the ACR operates in a space of excellence.   • Create and maintain a positive, collaborative, and cohesive work environment throughout the College.
  • Enhance, expand, and implement ACR’s current and future educational operations plans.
  • Actively collaborate with all ACR departments that develop educational content to identify and support organization-wide education strategies.
  • Actively collaborate with Meeting Services and Strategic (corporate) Relations departments regarding logistics, sponsorships, and exhibits.
  • Guide and support Education Department staff providing clear goals and Directly supervise approximately two Directors. Provide opportunities for acquisition of skills and knowledge to allow staff to be successful in existing role and to advance their careers.
  • Work with staff to develop systems to ensure consistent, high-quality programs and products, and thoroughly document systems to ensure efficient transfer of knowledge.
  • Oversee planning, content development and delivery for ACR’s annual scientific meeting that hosts <10,000 attendees and offers hundreds of in person and virtual scientific sessions. Duties include but are not limited to leading the volunteer and staff collaborations that result in abstract review, content selection, session design, analysis, budgeting, innovation, networking, engagement and overall meeting planning and execution.
  • Oversee planning and content development and delivery for approximately four additional educational meetings and other specified online educational activities.
  • Lead development and implementation of department, program, and product level evaluations. Develop objective-related measures, collect and analyze data, and translate findings for various audiences
  • Develop business models and plans to identify education-related strategic partnerships, generate revenue, promote reselling, increase learner participation and satisfaction, and improve patient
  • Evaluate and recommend product and meeting pricing models to support business
  • Oversee budget of approximately $12
  • Oversee execution related to CME/MOC, including leading ABIM strategy and ensuring CME activities are consistent with the expressed needs of the intended audience(s).
  • Analyze and report on accomplishments, challenges, content effectiveness, possibilities, industry trends and forecasting to Education Department staff, Staff Senior Leadership Team, Committee on Education, Board of Directors, and other groups.
  • Serve as staff liaison to Committee on Education or appoint designee.
  • Any other duties the Senior Vice President & Chief Administrative Officer or the Executive Vice President may assign.



The Senior Director, Education will be fully committed to the ACR’s mission. The individual will have demonstrated leadership, coaching, and relationship management experience and strong demonstrated success with a matrixed organization structure. Specific qualifications include:

  • Program Leadership: The successful candidate will have a track record of effectively leading outcome-based programs. They will have developed and operationalized strategies that have taken a program or organization to the next stage of growth.
  • Team Building, Development and Support: The successful candidate will have recruited, managed, and developed a strong team of staff and program/project managers. This individual will support, motivate, and mentor their team.
  • Exceptional Communication and Consensus Building Skills: The Senior Director, Education will have strong written and verbal communication skills. They will be a persuasive and credible communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.
  • BS/BA in related discipline with at least 8 years of relevant management experience; additional experience may substitute in lieu of degree.
  • Experience working for a national association strongly preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of relevant industry standards such as those established by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM); American Board Medical Specialties (ABMS); Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME).
  • Commitment to quality programs and excellence in organizational and project management with the ability to achieve strategic objectives.
  • Knowledgeable about price-setting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial oversight.
  • Track record of integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed with demonstrated passion for ACR’s mission and commitment to working collaboratively and effectively with a management team of senior professionals and other diverse groups of people.
  • Experience with learning management platforms, authoring tools, virtual meeting software applications (such as Pathable), Microsoft Office programs and project management software.
  • Ability to build consensus among a variety of constituencies, manage multiple tasks simultaneously and thrive in a complex environment with multiple priorities
